Web to account for 40% of all UK retail sales by 2020
Online sales are predicted to reach £40bn this year and are set to quadruple to £162bn by 2020, accounting for approximately 40% of the total UK retail spend, according to a new report.
Turner Broadcasting and a New York marketing firm agreed on Monday to pay $2 million in compensation to Boston-area authorities for a “guerrilla” advertising campaign that sparked a terrorism scare last week.
Travel on major roadways and rail lines was suspended and police responded in large numbers last Wednesday after authorities found blinking electronic devices wired to battery packs underneath bridges and by major transit hubs.
“They agreed to pay more than we would have been able, I believe, to recover through criminal or civil action,” Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley told reporters.
The 12-inch (30-cm) devices featured blinking lights depicting a character from “Aqua Teen Hunger Force,” an adult-themed program on Turner’s Cartoon Network. They were erected in 10 major U.S. cities and some of those in Boston had been in place for weeks before prompting the scare.
“We acknowledge our responsibility for the unconventional marketing tactic that we authorized, and apologize to the citizens of the greater Boston area,” said Turner and Interference Inc., the marketing company that the Time Warner Inc. unit hired to carry out the campaign.
Half of the $2 million will pay for the emergency response and half will fund homeland security and other programs by various groups, Coakley said.
